6 ways to celebrate Thanksgiving with local food

Oct 06, 2015

Thanksgiving is your community, whether that includes, family, friends, co-workers or pets!  Being thankful is especially easy when you live in an area of the world that provides so much amazing food right out our own front doors!  Try one (or all!) of these ways to bring a little local flavour into your Thanksgiving celebrations, or any day of the week!

1) Put together a cheese plate.

Whether you're hosting Thanksgiving or heading to visit with family or friends, a cheese plate is always a nice touch.  These are a few of our favourite cheesemakers in the Lower Mainland who source their dairy from local farms or are themselves a dairy farm!  You can't get more farm to plate than that.

Golden Ears Cheesecrafters - Maple Ridge

The Farm House Natural Cheeses - Agassiz

Milner Valley Cheese - Langley

Happy Days Dairies - Chilliwack

Birchwood Dairy Farm - Abbotsford

Goat’s Pride Dairy - Abbotsford

Smits & Cow Cheese - Chilliwack

2) Pick up some local produce for your salads and sides at one of our local markets.

Fresh greens and seasonal root vegetables and fruit take any meal up a notch.  These are our favourite seasonal and year round farm markets in the area:

Langley Community Farmers Market (Wednesdays)

Haney Farmers Market (Saturdays) - Maple Ridge

Abbotsford Farm & Country Market (Saturday)

Sparkes Corn Barn (in Abbotsford and Agassiz)

3) Buy local wine to serve your guests (or bring a hostess).

Shopping for wine at local wineries is a pleasure!  Have a tasting so you can choose the one your palate most prefers, and learn a few secrets behind the growing of these grapes in our area.  Bring a friend and make a day of it, you'll have some stories to tell on Thanksgiving day when you serve your favourite new wine.

Blue Heron Fruit Winery - Pitt Meadows

Chaberton Estate Winery - Langley

Township 7 Winery - Langley

Backyard Vineyards - Langley

Vista D’oro - Langley

The Fort Wine Company - Langley

Maan Farms & Estate Winery - Abbotsford

Singletree Winery - Abbotsford

Mt Lehman Winery - Abbotsford

Non alcoholic blueberry tea is a favourite from  Onnink’s Blueberry Farm as is the fresh pressed cider from Taves Family Farms, both located in Abbotsford.

4) Pick up your main course, raised locally.

Our local farms raise their own meat and are the best source for recipes and information about local food.  These are our favourite places to pick up food for Thanksgiving, Christmas, BBQ's and any meal!  You'll love shopping with local butchers rather than being crammed into a big box grocery store!

JD Turkey Farms - Langley

Tasty Chicken Farm - Agassiz

Hopcott Premium Meat - Pitt Meadows

Hofstede’s Country Barn - Chilliwack

Lepp Farm Market - Abbotsford

Neufeld Farms - Abbotsford

5) Don’t forget dessert!

Our markets have tons of great ready made desserts, as does the  Milsean Shoppe in Aldergrove, home of amazing scones, cakes, and their famous butter crunch candies. If you plan to make yours from scratch, stop by Anita’s Organic Grain & Flour Mill for all your baking needs.

6) Wow your host with flowers or a plant from a local garden centre.

Whether you decide to host your own dinner or are heading to someone else's home, fresh flowers or a potted plant can bring a little ambiance to any house.  Your locally owned garden centres raise their own plants and are a wealth of knowledge for green thumbs and those of us who still have much to learn.

Cedar Rim Nursery

Milner Village Garden Centre

Rustic Soap Co. in Chilliwack is a great place to pickup soaps, lotions, and other treats for a host who needs a little extra pampering!

6) Don’t feel like cooking? Let someone else do all the work and clean up the dishes for you!

These restaurants focus on local and seasonal produce and meat and are locally owned by chefs and business owners in your community.  Why not let them do the work over Thanksgiving weekend, just kick back and relax with a drink!
