Getting lost in the gardens at Tanglebank in Abbotsford
Aug 25, 2015
Tanglebank Gardens is one of those places that you'll feel like you just discovered, even though it's the best kept secret among the locals who pack it each day.
Nestled into a quiet country road in Abbotsford, the winding driveway is part of the charm. Set back far from the road, amid a path of gorgeous gardens, lies the post and beam nursery and Brambles Bistro.
The 20 acre site is home to a wide variety of plants and trees, grown on site by Brenda and Arnold Falk, with their daughters Kayla (chef) and Lauren (horticulturalist) also lending a hand in the family business. The entire crew is well versed on how to grow and prepare the best in local and it shows, from the bistro menu to the plants that line the covered greenhouses.
The restaurant and boutique are romantic and sweet, a perfect place for a date or to bring mom for a day trip. Brambles received rave reviews from the Vancouver Sun this past year and the lamb wrap we devoured during our visit was delicious! (View the full menu here)
Tanglebank Gardens, which opened in 1996, specializes in Japanese maples and hydrangeas, with one of the largest hydrangea collections in the lower mainland. When the flowers are in bloom, the effect is intoxicating and it'll be impossible for you to leave without buying a few for home.
Family owned and operated since day one, you'll find one of five generations of the family tending the gardens, nursery plants or restaurant at any given time. Cooking classes and other great events are planned throughout the year (check calendar here). Christmas is an especially magical time at Tanglebank, with the nursery lit up with twinkling white lights and the store packed with hand-painted decorations.
